Moving from one climate to another

Planning a long distance move requires a lot of attention to detail -- especially if it's to a new climate. We've got some tips.

Planning a move requires a lot of attention to detail -- especially if it's a long distance move. However, one thing that many people forget to address is the change of climate that they might experience if they are moving long distance. The following are a few tips on how to plan for a new climate:

  • Read up on the weather - There are a lot of different online sources that you can use to find out what the yearly weather is like wherever you're moving. For example, the Weather Channel has a nationwide map of average monthly highs and lows available on their site. Besides looking at temperatures, you should also look into humidity, precipitation and elevation stats.
  • Buy new clothing - Once you become more familiar with the climate of the area you're moving to, you should begin budgeting for new clothes. For example, if you're moving from the West Palm Beach area to Boston, you're going to need some winter clothing to keep you warm. If you're moving to an area like Seattle, you may need to invest in more heavy duty rain gear, such as rain boots. Take into account when you're going to move as well. If you're moving in the winter, you'll want to make sure your family has the clothes it needs by the time your move date rolls around.
  • Speak with your doctor - The body can take a while to adjust to sudden changes in climate. Speak with your family doctor, especially if anyone in your family has health problems, such as asthma or severe allergies. Your doctor can give you professional advice for staying healthy in new climates and warn you about potential issues that you might run into. For example, if you're asthmatic and you're moving to a place like Denver with a higher elevation, there's a chance that it will take you a while to adjust to breathing in thinner air. Besides speaking with your family doctor, speak with your vet if you have pets as well.
  • Find the right moving company - A moving company with long distance moving experience will know how to properly prepare for a change in climate and will be able to provide professional advice on how to pack.
